Alistair’s update

Hi everyone, it’s Alistair

Our latest video has just gone live, and it’s one of my favourites. Not just because it’s a review of a Porsche 911 Turbo S, but because I had the car for a good few days, the weather was on my side, and I managed to showcase just how practical this 700-horsepower monster can be.

I had the roof down in the sunshine, my dog in Porsche’s own pet carrier, and even a few bags of gravel in the boot after a trip to the DIY store. Add all this together – don’t forgot my partner was also in the back seat while the dog was up front – and it’s obvious why the 911 Turbo S is the ultimate everyday supercar. It literally does everything!

But which flavour of 911 would you have, money no object? This Turbo S, the GTS, the GT3 or the Carrera T? Let me know in the vote below!

Which current-get Porsche 911 is your favourite?

GTA VI Grotti Chetah

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto IV opened this week, and if you fancy splashing out on the Ultimate Edition you’ll get the virtual keys to the 1995 Grotti Chetah. This is the lawyer-approved GTA version of the Ferrari Testarossa, 1980’s bedroom poster icon and perhaps the perfect ride for cruising around the latest iteration of Vice City.

The Miami-white paintwork with red stripes is wonderfully excessive, and while the name has been used by GTA before, earlier versions of Chetah were more Seventies than Nineties, and less on the nose of what’s quiet clearly a litigation-dodging prancing horse.

This of course makes me extremely excited for what other cars GTA VI has in store.

The Ultimate edition also tosses you the keys to the wonderfully named 1972 Schyster Deviant muscle car, 1967 Vapid Dominator Buggy, Dinka Enduro off-road motorcycle, 1955 Vapid Stainer and Declasse Mamba GT, which isn’t a million miles from the Shelby Daytona Coupe.

Ultimate buyers also get the Shitzu Squalo day boat and Crest kayak, so all transportation bases are covered – unless you want to fly, in which case you’ll just have to steal a plane. Who remembers doing that in GTA V?

Is Ferrari returning to the manual gearbox?

Just a couple of weeks after Ferrari shocked the world with its all-electric Luce, the company is reportedly about reveal another new car – and it’ll be something very different.

If rumours are to be believed – and a recently unearthed patent is being acted on – then Ferrari is about to announce a new version of its 12Cilindri grand tourer with a manual gearbox. It’ll be the first Ferrari with the iconic H-gate ā€˜box and chrome-topped shifter since the California from 2012.

Ferrari 12Cilindri

But, unlike that car, the so-called 12Cilindri MM will reportedly use a simulated gear system, where the shifter and clutch pedal are not physically attached the gearbox. Instead, they’ll operate the transmission by wire and computer.

So while you won’t be physically shifting cogs yourself, the car will act as if you are – and only when you want to. Press a button, the theory goes, and it’ll turn back into a regular automatic. This also means it’ll prevent you from making mistakes, and you won’t accidentally cause a very expensive explosion by ā€˜money-shifting’ from fifth to second.

Naturally, the car is rumoured to be extremely limited (somewhere between 500 and 1,000 examples offered to Ferrri’s best customers), and no doubt extremely expensive, too. Will ordering a Luce or two help get you onto the 12C MM list? I wouldn’t like to say…

What I’m wearing

Daikoku Navy Tee by Caffeine & Machine

Caffeine & Machine is a trio of car-loving pubs spread cross the UK famous for their car club meets, food, events and every-one-is-welcome attitude. Doesn’t matter if you drive a Lamborghini, a Land Rover or a modified Volkswagen Lupo, you’ll be welcome at a Caff-and-Mac.

Pick up your own Daikoku tee at thecultofmachine.com

They also sell some great merch through their Cult of Machine brand, and I’ve recently picked up a Daikoku navy t-shirt. Daikoku is a truck stop in Yokohama, just outside Tokyo, which has become famous as a location for daily car meets – you might have seen Lewis Hamilton and Kim Kardashian rock up to Daikoku in a Ferrari F40 a few weeks ago, and the location also features in the Forza Horizon 6 video game.

A new tee doesn’t turn me into a Tokyo street racer, but it’s a cool bit of clothing all the same – and I’ll have much more to say about Daikoku later this summer, so stay tuned for that…

Thanks for reading The Next Drive. Catch you here next week!

Until then,

Alistair
